We're likely to have riots in every recession until we manage to change society enough to give eveyone a worthwhile future, and sufficient stake in their community not to go out and smash it up. That's going to take a lot more than a change of politicians; I agree they're part of the problem, but we mustn't forget the media, the banks, big business, this lousy token democracy which doesn't give us a real say in anything, etc, etc.

Money can indeed assume a disproportionate influence in our lives in the absence of a more powerful or more profound influence.
There is a parallel here with sexuality. It's a valuable and significant part of our humanity when it's balanced by love and committment. Otherwise, it becomes exaggerated and has a disproportionate influence.
"The love of money is the root of evil". We need to have an influence in our lives which balances the desire for money.
I would like to feel that the church could speak out that balancing word, for example by talking about the importance of giving; not simply to the church, but to others in need.
I think there's a spiritual dynamic in giving. It changes your life for the better.

Diviseness and maligning others is contrary to the Christian ethic which invites all to come to God for forgiveness irrespective of their past. We are called to live in love and acceptance of others. I feel strongly that we should stand out against the cheap jibes and slurs which do nothing to resolve problems in our society

As a Christian, I don't think I deserve God's love and forgiveness, and I'm immensely grateful that God doesn't apply a test on whether I "deserve" his grace. There's the old saying "there but for the grace of God go I" on which I think some MPs , particularly from priviledged backgrounds, might usefully reflect

I couldn't agree more. I hate this setting one group of people against another. I believe the Church must stand with the vulnerable and outcasts. Or have we stopped believing in grace? I was also shocked to read Cameron's words on stigmatising absent fathers. Surely we should be seeking to draw people into society, not pushing them out.

I think we need to confront, if not abortion itself, then the lack of information given by doctors or nurses to women who are considering an abortion about the possible and well-documented side-effects of the procedure.

Although some forms of horse-trading can be necessary to function as sane individuals in a society, I'm not a natural compromiser. Does this situate me as a disciple of Gamaliel?
